Imo NAWOJ seeks capital punishment for rapists
THE Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Imo State chapter has advocated for legislation of capital punishment for rape offenders.
This was disclosed by the Chairman of the body, Mrs. Florence Onwumere, recently in Owerri, capital of Imo State, after their executive meeting.
Onwumere said the body seriously frowned at the incessant cases of rape pervading the country, which has victims as women within the ages of 12 years and above, advocating that capital punishment was enough for such caught offenders.
She also urged governments at all levels, authorities of churches and socio- cultural organizations to intensify efforts to sensitize people on the upsurge of the crime and monitor what is happening around them.
While commending the Imo State government on the efforts made so far to apprehend offenders, she called on the law enforcement agencies to do more by intensifying arrests and punishing the rapists to serve as deterrent to others.
