More Nigerians and groups have extolled the virtues of the late former vice president, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, who died at the weekend in London during a brief illness.Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, described the deceased as an elder statesman with large stock of wealth of wisdom, quality service and exemplary leadership.

A statement by his chief press secretary, Enyinnaya Appolos, said Nigerians should emulate Ekwueme’s life of honest service to God and humanity. The south east zone of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described Ekwueme’s death as a big blow to the party and nation’s democracy. In a statement, the national vice chairman of the party Chief Austin, noted that the deceased was a founder of the PDP and suffered greatly to entrench democracy in the country.

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), in a statement, described Ekwueme as a unifying force for Nigeria’s unity, an exemplary leader that devoted his time to the stability of the nation.”“We recalled that in October 2012, when a high powered delegation of the ACF paid a visit to the Southeast on the invitation of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the late elder statesman came personally to receive our delegation and also led the Ndigbo team to the meeting with the ACF.

“The late elder statesman would be remembered for his selfless service to his father land and philanthropic activities. Nigeria has lost one of its fine politician, a bridge builder and a leader who lived a simple and humble life.”In his condolence message, the PDP candidate in the just-concluded Anambra State governorship election, Oselokja Obaze, described Ekwueme as a great Nigerian and an achiever.

The Progressives Peoples Alliance (PPA) candidate, Godwin Ezeemo, who hails from the same Aguata Local Government with Ekwueme, said: “He was a community developer, he inspired me in no small way. His death has left a gaping hole in the socio-political atmosphere of Old Aguata. His Akulue-uno principle, deep sense of patriotism, philanthropy and excellence in service will continue to serve as a reference point for us.”
