The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, yesterday in Sokoto expressed concern over the acute shortage of manpower in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The IGP who spoke while addressing officers and men of Zone 10 comprising Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi states at the Police Training School, said the country was grossly under- policed.

According to him, the United Nations’ standard stipulated a ration of one police to four hundred people. Nigeria has a ratio of one police to six hundred people.

He said that in order to address this shortfall, the NPF would embark on the recruitment of 10,000 officers yearly, starting this year with the aim of bridging the gap.

He said that the recruitment would be LG based so that every area would be represented. He further said the issues of promotion and accommodation were being taken seriously to enhance the effectiveness of the force.

Abubakar assured that apart from giving priority to the renovation of training schools and barracks, which were in a deplorable state, plans were underway to establish various schools to sharpen officers skills in a bid to professionalise the force.
