Benue Traditional Rulers Decry Carrying Arms By Herdsmen

The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, has stressed the need for community policing and sued for active participation of everybody in the task of addressing certain security challenges in the neighborhood.

The IG spoke through the Deputy Inspector General of Police in Charge of North Central Zone, Shaibu Gambo, during an interactive section with traditional rulers of the Tiv Area Traditional Council (TATC) presided over by the Chairman, Benue State Council of Chiefs and Tor Tiv 5, Orcivirigh Prof James Ayatse in Makurdi.

He said it is the policy of the present administration and the Police service to partner with owners of land (traditional chiefs) through constant interaction and cross-fertilisation of ideas, so as to build the confidence of all stakeholders.

While assuring the traditional rulers of the cooperation of the Nigeria Police and neutrality in handling security issues in the state like elsewhere, Idris further sympathised with victims and families that lost their loved ones through criminal attacks in the state.

In their contribution, most of the traditional rulers, who spoke, decried a situation, where herdsmen are allowed to freely carry about dangerous weapons without arrest, even when they attack and kill innocent villagers.

They bemoaned a situation, where there are few security personnel in a district and called for the recruitment of more policemen on the basis of federal character, with emphasis on every local government so as to help check herdsmen attacks.

They also lamented the reluctance of police to arrest the terrorizing herdsmen, who seem above the law and called for an equal protection of all Nigerians by security agents, irrespective of tribe and religion.
