IG Declares War On Cultism
Edo To Renovate Barrack With N200m
THE Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, has declared war on cultism and cult-related clashes in Edo State and other parts of the country.
He said he was determined to put an end to activities of rival cult groups that have claimed several lives in the country in the past.
Arase said this in Benin City at a reception organised for him by the Edo State government, during which Governor Adams Oshiomhole pledged N200 million to renovate Ogida Barracks in the state capital.
Arase, who was accompanied by his wife and children, said he would use his position for the betterment of the force and security of Nigerians, stressing, “I was promoted and demoted, and for an Edo indigene to rise to become a Commissioner of Police (CP), it takes about 28 or 35 years.”
“That I was able to become a CP and also become an IGP is divine providence. I was not the best; ask Parry Osayande, ask Magnus Eweka, they were fantastic officers, but they never got to the top. There are things that define an Edo man: excellence, hard work and integrity; these define my character. I have fought many battles, I have won some, but being the first Edo man to become the IGP is my defining moment,” he added.
Noting that he has kept his promise of dismantling roadblocks, he said Edo State has been bedeviled by the menace of cultism, a trend he was ready to decisively stamp out.
According to him, “We have serious issues with cultism in Edo State. I will continue to deal with them, and I will continue to arrest them. I have insisted that nobody in the state, no matter how highly placed, can abridge the interest of Edo State. Anyone involved in cultism will be dealt with. I will spare no one, whether in government or not. I have brought a CP that first came to ensure that the issues of cultism were dealt with. He was taken away but I have brought him back. I am sure he is back to complete the directives I gave him.”
On his part, Oshiomhole said the people of the state were “very proud that one of us, simply on the basis of merit, has been picked as the IG.
I want us to appreciate President Muhammadu Buhari, because he appreciates merit. That is why we are here to celebrate our brother. The president is laying foundation for building institutions that would thrive on merit.

“…I have brought a CP that first came to ensure that the issues of cultism were dealt with. He was taken away but I have brought him back. I am sure he is back to complete the directives I gave him.”- Arase. This is serious. Who took the CP that you brought to do a good job away? Who did that? Big question. We have always suspected that there is someone or some people who have been making things difficult for you, Mr. Arase. Who is that? Who are they? If that is the same reason why we cannot have an honest and transparent probe into the kidnap and murder of Mr. Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Udemba in Anambra state then we need the intervention from President Buhari in this case. We know that we do and that is why we have been consistently appealing to him for a strong intervention. Why is it that no investigations get to the root in Nigeria? Either it is not done or left inconclusive. It gets to the root, most of the times, only when a few “street boys” without god fathers are involved leaving the “big wigs” who are normally the masterminds to go scot free. I am still finding it difficult to imagine why Nigeria under, this new administration, can not smoke out all the sponsors and masterminds of the kidnap and murder of Mr. Udemba, a good citizen of Nigeria. Please PMB, kindly order an honest and transparent probe into the kidnap and murder of this good man. If the police has any difficulty doing so, I strongly believe that the DG, SSS can help or simply get a few military intelligence officers to finish this job. Please, Your Excellency, help the wife and children of late Mr. Udemba. A family cannot be suffering this way in the country without anyone doing something serious about it.
We will review and take appropriate action.
