Gunmen, yesterday, killed a senior official of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) near Rano Village, Kano.

Gunmen, yesterday, killed a senior official of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) near Rano Village, Kano.

The attack at about 2 a.m. Thursday during a routine patrol also left two officers with bullet wounds.

NDLEA chairman, Col. Mohammad Mustapha Abdullah, said the gunmen opened fire at the operatives when the team approached a roadblock.

Although the chairman was not sure if the perpetrators were drug traffickers, he insisted the agency would not be deterred from its war against peddlers.

The Commander, Kano State Command of the NDLEA, Hamza Umar, said the late officer had since being buried according to Islamic rites in Zuru, Kebbi State.

“The late Tanko Ampani was the gallant team leader. He was shot dead when the team approached a roadblock at about 2a.m. on Thursday. They went for an operation, which was successful because they arrested suspects.

On their way back, the officers met a roadblock. They stopped and tried to clear the roadblock. In the process, gunmen opened fire on them.”

Abdullah regretted the loss of the officer, who might have survived the attack, had the men been kitted with bulletproof vests. He said the incident has revealed how poorly funded and lacking in logistics the NDLEA was.

The agency has lost four personnel in the last two months.
