Group urges electorate to vote candidates capable of solving nation’s problems

A global campaign and advocacy organisation, ONE, yesterday charged the Nigerian electorate to use their votes and to resolve the challenges facing the country in the 2019 general elections.

It said jobs creation, tackling corruption, providing healthcare, education, security and agriculture, should be top most in the minds of the electorate in making their choices next year.

Country Director of ONE, Serah Zainab Makka-Ugbabe, said during its awareness and sensitization programme in Abuja that “ONE is a global movement campaigning to end extreme poverty and preventable diseases by 2030 so that everyone, everywhere can lead a life of dignity and opportunity”

Makka-Ugbabe stated that although the problems are consistent across all regions, age groups and genders, but their magnitude and order of importance vary from zone to zone.

She said investigations showed that in the six geopolitical zones across the country, an average of 61 per cent of the polled population think that jobs creation, economy, corruption and security, among others, are the most critical issues the incoming government should tackle.

Speaking further, she averred that Nigeria is a youthful country, adding that by 2030, its population would rise to 264 million, half of whom will be under 25 years old.

It added that the 2019 polls would be a crucial moment for the country, adding: “If it harnesses this youth bulge successfully, it could turn it into a demographic advantage, otherwise, the challenges the country faces could multiply.”
