Governement to salvage more impoverished Nigerians, says Osinbajo

The Federal Government is to drive initiatives geared at getting more Nigerians out of poverty and improving the country’s human capital development indices, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has disclosed.

He gave the assurance during a meeting of the National Economic Council’s (NEC) Human Capital Development Core Working Group in Abuja.

A statement yesterday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, said the meeting also entertained a presentation on prioritising and improving the nation’s human capital development base.

The vice president said government was committed to driving initiatives to accelerate human capital development in the country because “lifting our people out of poverty is a crucial agenda towards attaining intended developmental outcomes.”

He noted: “Poverty as we know is both a cause and consequence of some of what we are looking at in our human capital development deficit.

Really, I think we need to focus a lot more on some of the more creative ways of getting our people out of poverty. And of course, we have some social investment programmes.

We are looking at some of the examples of what India did, some have been tried and tested in such huge populations.”

Meanwhile, the vice president has described education as key to a vibrant economy.

He said government was committed to prioritising its policies along the education line.

Osinbajo stated this as guest of honour at the 29th convocation of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) for cadets of 66 Regular Course, postgraduate students and honorary degree awardees totalling 1,562.
