Ghanaian govt to sponsor 2,600 fans to tourney
Chairman of Ghana Football Supporters Club, Abraham Boakye, disclosed to sports24ng.com that the government has agreed and put structures in place to provide for the transportation, accommodation, feeding and local movement to and from matches for the 2,600 Ghanaians to the tourney.
The number, according to him, is drawn from all segments of the Ghanaian society – “from the supporters, press, students, politicians, civil servants, the private sector, the villages, cities and so on.” He added: “We made representations to government pleading that it should foot the bills of supporters and fans to the World Cup.
“We have been following and supporting the team through the qualifiers at our expense and having qualified, government has to take over. It is now a national and not individual or club responsibility and, thankfully, it has graciously agreed to do so.
“I tell you, no Ghanaian supporter is going to pay a cedi to the World Cup. Government is taking care of us.”
However, it is not all roses for the Ghana supporters club as Boakye also revealed that there were divisions in their ranks. According to him, “currently, there are about 10 splinter football supporters factions in Ghana. They arose when some people tried to drag the club into national politics to benefit some politicians.
“They forgot that politicians will come and go and that football will remain. Thankfully, the honourable minister of sports is trying to reconcile the groups and we are hoping that he succeeds, but it has been a problem for us.”
