Gabonese ex-minister accused of embezzling 3 mn euros
A former Gabonese minister of public service was jailed on Monday for allegedly embezzling some three million euros ($3.3 million) while he was in charge of tax services, a judicial source said Tuesday.
Serge Maurice Mabiala was arrested Thursday at his home before being charged and jailed in Libreville Monday for allegedly pocketing nearly two billion CFA francs (three million euros), prosecutor Sidonie Flore Ouwe told local press.
Mabiala, a member of the political bureau of the ruling Gabonese Democratic Party, denies any wrongdoing, according to a source close to the investigation.
According to investigators, he embezzled the money as part of bankruptcy proceedings during his time as head of the Tax Directorate.
