FG urges parents to support girl-child science education

The Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, Winifred Oyo-Ita, has charged professionals in the sector to mobilise mothers to encourage the girl child to become interested in science and technology education.

She gave the charge in a statement made available to The Guardian after the Society of Women Engineers, Technologists and Scientists paid a courtesy visit to her office in Abuja, yesterday.

Oyo-Ita, while applauding the initiative of the society to launch engineering, science and technology as a desirable career aspiration for women, called on the members to use their expertise to encourage other women scientists to key into their development activities.

She said: “My appreciation goes to the society whose objectives, among others, is to provide significant voice for women engineers, technologists and scientists, enabling them play their role in nation building; address the under representation of women in science, technology and engineering sector; encourage women and girls to go for science, technology and engineering education; and increase rates of recruitment, retention and progression of women to help the needs of the Nigeria economy in tandem with government’s desire to develop the critical mass of the Nigerian women and girls using science and technology apparatus.”

President of the Society of Women Engineers, Technologists and Scientists, Vera Egwautu, said the professional body was in the ministry to inform the permanent secretary of its existence, inauguration of the association in October, and to further brief her on the society’s activities so far as well as establish areas of collaboration and partnership with the ministry.
