Five days after his daughter, Rachael, a student of Caleb University, was abducted from their Epe, Lagos residence, her father, Mr. Chukwuemeka Umejuru, yesterday pleaded for her release.

Though the kidnappers have made contact with the family barely 24 hours after taking Rachael into captivity, the family yesterday said the ransom was an amount too outrageous for them to afford.

The 64-year-old man, while making a passionate appeal to the kidnappers, said he would not mind dying for her daughter, a student of Accounting at Caleb University.Speaking at their Epe residence yesterday, he said: “We have not eaten any food since she was kidnapped. We are fasting and praying for her release because her safety is paramount to us.

“On the day the kidnappers struck, we were all in the sitting room all night until around 2:00a.m. It was not up to 15 minutes after we all retired to our various rooms that they struck. They invaded our apartment and broke down the door. The men who were armed with cutlass and axes forced their way into our house and took away my daughter.

“Surprisingly, when they entered, they did not demand for money, but went straight to my daughter’s room where she was sleeping and asked her to follow them. It was even her scream that drew our attention to the presence of the kidnappers.

“Immediately, her mother and elder sister who were in their room also joined me in trying to resist the kidnappers from going with her. But they pounced on me and blood started gushing out of my head. I was later rushed to the hospital. Three days after she was abducted, I was allowed to speak with her on phone and she was begging me to come and take her away and give the gunmen whatever they demanded for.”

Umejuru, who dismissed notions that his daughter might have made some enemies in the neighborhood, said she was an introvert, who was always occupied with her laptop when not in school.

Meanwhile, the Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed the kidnap of two businessmen: Labbo Giyawa and Murtala Dantata by unknown gunmen. The command’s spokesman, El-Mustapha Sani, told newsmen yesterday that the two men were kidnapped at Giyawa, Goronyo Local Council of the state.

Sani said: “I can confirm the abduction of the two businessmen on Sunday night, around 10:00p.m. They were seized by some gun-wielding men, while they were reportedly sleeping in the frontage of their various houses.”He, however, said that the kidnappers were yet to establish communication with either their families or the police.
