Agricultural experts have warned farmers against the use of excessive chemical fertiliSers on food crops.

Agricultural experts have warned farmers against the use of excessive chemical fertiliSers on food crops.

The Chairman of Contec Global Agro Limited (CGAL) Dr. Benoy Berry, who gave the warning, said they could have negative impact on the human body.

He spoke while receiving the Chairman, Federation of Agricultural Commodity Associations of Nigeria (FACAN) Mr. Musa Labaran Wamba, and the President, Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN), Prof. Benjamin Ewa Ubi.

He attributed the rejection of most of Nigerian food crops in the European markets to the high chemical content.

The Contec boss stressed that the consistent application and use of chemical fertilisers was capable of not only negatively impacting the human body, but also crops and environment.

He urged farmers to boost their production with the manufactured bio-fertilisers, which use microbes and bacteria from the soil.

He, however, called on the government to key into the use of biological solution for better crop yields, adding that CGAL has the capacity to train over one million farmers on proper application of the inputs.

According to him, government’s collaboration in making land available for cultivation would go a long way in making the project to succeed in the country.

Ewa Ubi commended the company’s bio-based innovative technology and urged other investors to emulate it, saying it would help in finding solution to food challenges.

He added that BSN would partner the company to find solution to the current food crises in the country, with science and technology innovation.

Also, the Chairman of the BSN Board of Trustees, said: “We are indeed happy that this company has brought solutions to the Nigerian farmers in the area of the best solution by using bio fertilisers.”
