Expert advocates help for widows, orphans

Ahead of the 2016 International Widows’ Day, Nigerians have been urged to bring smiles to the faces of the downtrodden in the society, particularly widows, orphans and the less privileged.

This call was made by the founder of Rose of Sharon Foundation (RoSF), Mrs. Folorunso Alakija, at a press briefing in preparation for the 2016 edition of the celebration, titled: ‘Widows’ Economic Empowerment and Political Participation: A call to Action’.

Alakija, who was represented by Mrs. Temitope Olusola, said the event is celebrated on every June 23, and is supported by the United Nations (UN) to address poverty and injustice faced by millions of widows and their dependents.

She noted that RoSF took the lead by making sure the marginalised group’s plight is brought to the center stage and attention given to various issues they face in the society.

She said the 2016 celebration would have state governments, Federal Government agencies, CSOs, NGOs, and the private sector working together to ensure the widow’s rights are upheld in the society.

“Also, there will be medical enlightenment campaign, which includes a Health Talk on depression and free medical consultation and checks with free drugs to address different illnesses for widows and their children with a good number of volunteer medical doctors and nurses who will attend to them,” she said.
