A former lawmaker from Katsina State, Senator Kanti Bello is dead.

Bello, 72 died in Abuja in the early hours of yesterday, after battling an undisclosed illness.

His former Personal Assistant, Aminu Ashiriu confirmed his demise to The Guardian.

According to him, the late lawmaker had slightly recovered from the illness, but that when his condition became complicated “He was rushed to the hospital in Abuja for treatment, where he died yesterday in the morning.”

He said he would be buried in Abuja according to Islamic rites.

Born in January 1945, Bello was a two-time senator who represented Daura senatorial zone from 2003 to 2011.

He was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), before crossing over to the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and later to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He is survived by one wife and many children, one of whom is the commissioner for resource development in Kastina State.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina,
commiserated with his family and the people of the state.

He also consoled the senate over the passage of their distinguished colleague and former Senate Chief Whip.

Buhari recalled that the late Bello was a very outspoken and courageous patriot, who worked hard to ensure that all levels of government were accountable.

He said his contributions to the unity of Nigeria would be long remembered.
