FORMER African Champions League winner, Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia, has named Dutchman Piet Hamberg as its new coach. The 56-year-old is the former academy manager at English club, Liverpool, as well as an assistant coach with Togo at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. He takes over from Khaled Ben Sassi, who has been caretaker coach since Lotfi Rhim was sacked two months ago.

Hamed Kammoun, who replaced Moez Driss as Etoile’s chairman a week ago, has decided to replace Ben Sassi despite his good results so far. Etoile has struggled since winning the African Champions League in 2007 when it beat Egypt’s Al Ahly in the final.

This season, it struggled in the group stages of the Champions League and did not make it in the semi-finals. It has not qualified for the 2010 Champions League and instead will play in the second-tier Confederation Cup. Hamberg is expected to start his job early in the New Year.
