Enugu state government has refuted claims by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) that the government owes N2.6 billion in unpaid electricity bills.

Enugu state government has refuted claims by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) that the government owes N2.6 billion in unpaid electricity bills.
The state government said rather, that EEDC owes it N300 million arising from over billing. Enugu State Commissioner for Information, Dr Godwin Udeuhele said yesterday that the clarification became necessary following erroneous claims by EEDC.

It would be recalled that the Minister of Power, Works and Housing,Dr. Babatunde Fashola had during the 16 power sector meeting in Enugu appealed to the state government to settle the debt it owed the company. Fashola had said that the EEDC petitioned him to intervene, saying the debt formed part of the challenges that have hindered the efficiency of the company.

The minister had also faulted a no confidence vote passed on the EEDC by the State Assembly and claimed that the company has been under severe attack in the state.
Udeuhele said that contrary to the claim by the company, it was EEDC that owed the state government. He said they had taken steps to encourage the company and had remitted N100 million to EEDC before they made a startling discovery of the true position of things.
