The National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ahmed Makarfi; former Vice President Alex Ekwueme and Secretary, National Caretaker Committee, Ben Ndii Obi, among others, yesterday kicked off the gubernatorial campaign for the November 18 election.

The All Saints Cathedral Field, Onitsha, venue of the flag off was filled to capacity by party officials, members and supporters.

Makarfi, who spoke at All Saints Cathedral Field, Onitsha, venue of the event, expressed appreciation for the turnout. He said it was an indication that the party would take over Anambra State from All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) come November 18.

He, therefore, charged all party members to strive within their localities to return power back to PDP, stressing that there was need for Anambra State to be in the mainstream of PDP national government that would soon be restored.

The National Chairman while presenting the flag to the gubernatorial candidate, Mr. Oseloka Obaze and his deputy, Lady Chidi Alexandra Onyemelukwe, told the party members that it rested within their powers to deliver the candidate in the forthcoming election.

Ekwueme, whose daughter is the running mate, regretted that Peter Obi took advantage of the weakness caused by the division in PDP to snatch power under APGA.

He said Obi had realised the potentials of the PDP and had since joined the party.

Obi said he worked very hard to bring Obiano in and says he is working very hard to remove him.

Meanwhile, a civil rights group, International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety), has tasked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to walk the talk by demonstrating practically that its assurances of free and credible governorship poll in Anambra State are realistic.

In a letter to the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Anambra State by Dr. Nwachukwu Orji, the group said despite the heartwarming assurances to make the crucial election very credible, some critical steps have not been taken barely 32 days to the election, thereby raising concerns over the genuineness of the promises.
