Ekiti CJ orders release of 34 awaiting trial inmates
Ekiti State Chief Judge, Justice Ayodeji Daramola has ordered the release of 34 awaiting trial inmates from the Federal Prison, Ado Ekiti.
The Chief Judge gave the order after reviewing the cases of the entire 273 Awaiting Trial Inmates during his visit to the Prison.
Of the 34 inmates released, 11 were released unconditionally while the remaining 23 were released based on the advice of the State Director of Public Prosecution that they had no case to answer. Three other inmates were also granted bail.
Addressing stakeholders after the exercise, the Chief Judge commended the Authorities of the Prison for the clean environment and the remarkable improvement in the facilities of the prison since his last visit to the correctional facility last year.
He also lauded the prison authorities for the provision of a clinic and some sports facilities for the inmates but stressed the need to ensure that the clinic was equipped with adequate medical personnel and drugs.
The Chief Judge called on religious bodies, non-governmental and public spirited organizations to support government’s efforts at making the Prisons a correctional and rehabilitation centre indeed, by donating relevant and needed materials to the facility.
