Edo varsity ASUU denies reports of factional body

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Ali University (AAU) Ekpoma, Edo State chapter, has debunked reports that the union was factionalised. Its Chairman, Dr. Monday Igbafen, who commented on alleged factionalisation of the union in the institution said the union remained one.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Ali University (AAU) Ekpoma, Edo State chapter, has debunked reports that the union was factionalised. Its Chairman, Dr. Monday Igbafen, who commented on alleged factionalisation of the union in the institution said the union remained one.He spoke while reacting to media reports that the union had been engulfed in a leadership crisis, which disrupted its election scheduled for February 27, 2018.

According to the reports, some aggrieved members of the union had condemned the tenure extension for the executives and accused the chairman of allegedly steering the affairs of the union without regards for laid down procedure, just as he was accused of failure to its other members along.

Igbafen, however, explained that the union held a congress on April 12, 2018 for the purpose of conducting an election into various positions in the executive committee.
He noted that a national team led by its National Vice President, Professor Vincent Osodeke, monitored the conduct of the election.

“The election was generally peaceful with a massive turnout of members. “So, there is no faction. We have held our election.“Our election has brought an end to the speculations. Everybody participated in the election,” he added.He, however, expressed hope that the new leadership of the union would continue to work for the improvement of its members’ welfare.
