Delta govt tasks Labour on dialogue, assures camaraderie
THE Special Adviser to the Delta State Governor on Labour Matters, Comrade Mike Okeme has pleaded with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to always explore dialogue rather than being confrontational.
Okeme, who spoke in Asaba when the state chairman of the Congress,, Comrade David Ofoeyeno visited him, flayed the crisis usually generated by unions’ elections across the country.
He said Governor Ifeanyi Okowa would not unduly delay workers’ salaries,, promising that the new administration was poised to making the labour movement a success.
While acknowledging the Labour’s continued struggle for better welfare of workers, Okeme, a former NLC Chairman in the state, disclosed that government had put machinery in place to support Labour’s aspirations in the state.
He said: “Always use dialogue to get what you want from the government of the day instead of confrontation. The union is expected to make its members one united family. So while you struggle for better welfare package for workers and good governance, do not do anything that will bring shame to your state and the government in the saddle because peace is better than war.”
Okeme urged workers, including those who were recently sacked as a result of the alleged fraud that characterised their recruitment exercise, to be patient with the state government.
