Cross River lawmaker dies, Senator Adeyemi loses wife

A member of the Cross River State House of Assembly, representing Ikom II constituency, Simon Nkoro Egbong, has been reported dead.It was gathered that the late Egbong had been battling with a protracted illness that has seen him travelling frequently to India for treatment.

A member of the Cross River State House of Assembly, representing Ikom II constituency, Simon Nkoro Egbong, has been reported dead.It was gathered that the late Egbong had been battling with a protracted illness that has seen him travelling frequently to India for treatment. He died on Saturday night at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.

Reacting to the death, the governor, Prof Ben Ayade, expressed shock and sadness. He said in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Ita, that the death of the lawmaker is a “loss so painful to bear.”

“Nkoro’s demise leaves a sour taste in my mouth and ache in my heart. But then, we cannot question God. Him and only Him alone has prerogative over life. However, as a human, my heart is heavy, filled with sorrow. I agonise and mourn this death,” the statement said.

While decrying that the late lawmaker “departed at a time his service to our dear state is most needed,” he described him as “a dedicated lawmaker, a consummate politician, a team player and loyal party man, whose death is a huge loss to the people and government of Cross River.”He offered his heartfelt condolences to Nkoro’s family, colleagues and constituency. He prayed God to grant them the strength to bear the irreplaceable loss, saying “we are together with you in prayers in this moment of unspeakable sadness.”

In a related development, Senator Smart Adeyemi’s wife, Yemisi, has passed on. Adeyemi represented Kogi West Senatorial District in the Senate until 2015. Yemi’s death was announced on Saturday by the coordinator of Smart Adeyemi Vanguard, Barrister Labaran.

“With deepest and heart felt sorrow, I condole our Senator for the sudden lost of his beloved wife, we pray that the Almighty give you the strength to bear this sudden great loss,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, has mourned her demise. A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Petra Akinti Onyegbule, condoled with Adeyemi and the entire family of the deceased.While praying to God to grant eternal repose to her soul, Bello enjoined Adeyemi to be consoled “by the knowledge that his wife and partner of many years has only gone before him to rest and they shall meet again on the Resurrection Morning”.

Bello extended his condolences to the people of Kogi West Senatorial District and everyone who is affected by the death of Mrs. Adeyemi. Similarly, Adeyemi’s successor, Dino Melaye, has expressed his sadness. His statement read: “Smart Adeyemi accept my empathy over the loss of your beloved wife. It came as a rude shock. Our God who is the greatest comforter will comfort you in times like this. It is well with you. Affliction shall not arise again. God is your strength.“May the Almighty God grant you the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. May her soul Rest In Peace”.
