Residents and commuters around Ikorodu corridor have commended the Lagos State government for banning the 1st BRT Cooperative operator from plying the Mile 12 – CMS Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route. The move, which they described as courageous, was long overdue in the face recklessness and sloppy services alleged against the operator.

The 1st BRT cooperative, owned by the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos State Council, was on Thursday suspended from the route following the termination of a 2007 franchise agreement by the state government.

Residents at the weekend said they had lost hope that the government was going to give them any respite from “the arrogance of the operator who was only driven by profit motive.” A commuter, Abigail Olaniyan, said the move was a respite for years of impunity that the “touts turned operators” had been known for on the corridor.

Olaniyan said though the move was a step in the right direction, but it would take a while to really restore peoples’ confidence in the rapid transit scheme.

Another resident, Mojaye, urged the government to monitor the new operator to ensure that it does not breach the agreement signed with the regulatory agency, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).

Maria Adeyanju advised the government to put in place proper monitoring to make sure that never would any transport operator go below standard to exploit the people.
