College shut indefinitely following protests, alleged death of student

Management of the College of Education Gindiri, Mangu Local Government of Plateau state has shut down academic activities in the school indefinitely following students’ protest, which allegedly claimed the life of a student as property worth millions of naira was destroyed.

It was gathered that the students embarked on a protest demanding the release of identification cards and the cancellation of a National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Policy, which they claimed to have paid to the school, but whenever they visited the school clinic, they are asked to still pay money. It was gathered that during the protests, the students burned down the school clinic and damaged several cars belonging to staff, destroyed doors and windows of the Administrative buildings of the institution before the arrival of the police.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the school, Elizabeth Aboreng, who spoke to The Guardian on phone, disclosed that the students from NCE II class had protested against the non-release of their ID cards by the school management and later took laws into their hands by burning down property in the institution including the school clinic and ambulance.

However, information gathered revealed that in the midst of the protests, one student was allegedly hit by a stray bullet and died. When contacted, the Plateau State Police Command, Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent Mathias Terna Tyopev, confirmed the incident but was expecting details from the Divisional Police Officer of Gindiri.
