Camp commandant axed for assaulting female corps member

NATIONAL Youth Service Corps (NYSC), yesterday, withdrew the camp commandant at the ongoing orientation exercise in Karaye, Kano, for allegedly assaulting a female corps member.

The camp commandant, Captain G C Anyea, of the Nigerian Army was alleged to have manhandled some female corps members on Friday night, a development that led to mass protest in the camp.

Sources said the protest almost led to physical combat with the security operatives in the camp, but was subsequently brought under control following the intervention of NYSC officials.

A corps member, who spoke to The Guardian in confidence, lamented that besides the strenuous regimental exercise, corps members have been subjected to physical discipline from the military for irrelevant orders.

He said corps members were fed up with excessive punishment from the commandant and his soldiers.

NYSC Kano State Coordinator, Mallam Ladan Baba, who confirmed the development on telephone revealed that the camp commandant was decamped to douse tension on camp, pointing out that the Commandant overreached himself when he made “physical body contact with a female Corps member” during the night. 

“We have directed the immediate withdrawal of the Captain, following mounting tension in the camp. Our investigation shows that the camp commandant subjected the corps members to corporal punishment, which is against the principles of NYSC,” Ladan explained.
