THE National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, Wednesday gave assurance that President Muhammadu Buhari would surely appoint the best crop of Nigerians to serve in his cabinet.

Meanwhile, President Buhari has congratulated Odigie-Oyegun, who marked his 76th birthday anniversary Wednesday.

In a statement by Malam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Buhari joined Oyegun’s friends and political associates across the country in celebrating his very remarkable life of service to his people and country.

Odigie-Oyegun, while speaking at the National Secretariat of APC when the Association of Northern Students visited him on the occasion of his 76th birthday and one-year in office as the APC’s helmsman, said contrary to notions held in certain quarters, nobody is interfering with President Buhari over the choice of his ministers.

According to him: “What some of us in the progressives movement that has now transformed into a governance in this country cannot accept is that the nation needs to be as bad as it is today. Yes, the circumstances of last 15 years ago are different, the nature of economy is different, people have evolved but the basic fact remains the same and that is for any nation, for any government to have any legitimacy, its key emphasis and the whole justification for its existence must be the welfare of the people who have entrusted that party or that leader with the governance of their common affairs, that is the key thing.

“Fortunately, we have a blue-print which makes your welfare and everybody’s welfare the core of his attention. Yes, things have turned out to be worse in the economy than we expected when we were campaigning. Every known indicator of good conduct has been violated and our institutions have factually been destroyed, even to the extent of tampering with security institutions.”

He further said: “So, we have a major reconstruction efforts ahead of us. One can only say at this time to plead through you to Nigerians to be patient with us.

“We have a totally new situation, a new reality and a new approach to governance which is emphasising target and deliverables in the lives of the people that he has been entrusted to govern.”

Chairman of the NNST, Mr. Mike Omoba, congratulated Odigie-Oyegun for his landmark achievements over the years as a true democrat whose contributions led to the defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the last polls.

The President commended the exemplary patriotism, selflessness and dedication to the progress and well being of Nigeria, which Oyegun has demonstrated throughout his long and very successful career as a top civil servant and political leader.

“President Buhari also salutes Chief Oyegun’s integrity, wisdom, hard-work and visionary leadership which, contributed in no small measure, to the successful formation of the APC and the party’s historic victory in the last general elections.
