After about 500 days since terrorist group, Boko Haram, abducted them, President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State have rekindled hope that the 219 Chibok schoolgirls will be released unconditionally.

They said the government was fully “committed and concerned” about the unconditional rescue of abducted girls that were kidnapped by the terrorists on April 14, 2014 in their school premises.

The assurances were made yesterday, while Governor Shettima was addressing parents and guardians of abducted school girls at Multi-Purpose Hall of Government House, Maiduguri.

He said that he was directed by President Muhammadu Buhari to address all the affected parents and urge them to “exercise more patience,” as the Federal Government was fully committed in the immediate and unconditional release of abducted the girls to join their parents in Chibok.

I have called all of you here today (Saturday) on the directives of Mr. President Muhammadu Buhari to address you on the release of your 219 daughters abducted in April last year, while writing their examinations.

The President asked me to tell you that you should exercise more patience. I’m with all of you here today, as our President is also with you, who is very much concerned and committed towards the unconditional release of these abducted girls.

We leaders have a responsibility to ensure that the girls are released as soon as possible, God’s willing. God will release these girls; we are optimistic that they are still alive.

Government is very much concerned about the abduction of these girls, as we have supported the 56 escaped girls on their education to the university level in the country.

The President has shown us love by making four top appointments in the Presidency and military, mainly to ensure that the girls are released unconditionally.”

Continuing, he said, “as you continue to exercise more patience, President Buhari has directed me to give you the assistance of N100, 000 each along with male and female clothes, before our daughters are released very soon. The N21.9 million cash donation, and clothes are however not a ransom for abductions of your daughters.

I want the Chairman of Chibok council area, Ba’ana Lawan to ensure that each and every parents and guardians collect N100, 000 and the clothes.”

On President Buhari’s commitments, Shettima said: “Four Borno and Adamawa states indigenes have been appointed by the President, so as to facilitate the immediate and unconditional release of 219 Chibok school girls.

It has never been done in any part of the world, where top and sensitive positions were given to two states in the North East sub-region of the country.”
