breadThe National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has certified breads in Rivers State free from potassium bromate following its on-the-spot test of bread from over 180 registered bakeries in the state.

NAFDAC’s Rivers Coordinator, Mercy Ndukwe, said the state achieved 100 per cent success in the annual bread monitoring exercise due to effective regulation and enlightenment campaigns over the years on the harmful effects of potassium bromate in bread baking.

In his address at the flag-off of the annual bread monitoring exercise in Port Harcourt, the Director General, Dr. Paul Orhii, reiterated the agency’s determination to enforce the ban on the use of potassium bromate in bakery.

Represented by the South-South Zonal Coordinator, Benson Kine, the NAFDAC chief said that toxicology study on potassium bromate showed that it degrades vitamin A2, B1, B2, E and niacin, which are the main vitamins available in bread, and can cause cough and sore throat when inhaled by humans.
