The Federal Government has bemoaned the increasing levels of food insecurity and malnutrition in the country as a result of Boko Haram insurgency in the north, which it said has become of great concern to the states and local governments.

It is against this background that the government and other stakeholders, who met in Abuja, stressed the need for collaboration so as to come up with well-informed evidence based policies and programmes to nip the crisis in the bud and address the situation.

The government noted that the rising food insecurity has risen to prominence, the need to have a good and nutrition security early warning system, capable of providing real time information on impending shocks and the impacts the shocks may have on peoples incomes, livelihoods, food and nutrition security.

The permanent secretary in the ministry of agriculture, Bukar Hassan spoke in Abuja at the opening of a technical validation workshop on the road map for establishing a comprehensive food and nutrition security Early Warning System (EWS) in Nigeria.

He also disclosed that the minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh has approved the initiative clearing the way for a concerted effort to finalise the proposal and launch the EWS.

He explained that Nigeria’s EWS was benefiting from the permanent interstate committee for drought control in the Sahel (CILSS) both financially and technically in the articulation and launch of the EWS.
