Boko Haram: Brazilian government awards Buratai highest national military honour.

For showing uncommon courage and examplary military leadership in fighting terrorism, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai has being honoured by the Brazilian government with highest military award.

For showing uncommon courage and examplary military leadership in fighting terrorism, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai has being honoured by the Brazilian government with highest military award.

The Brazilian Military Order of Merit Award was conferred on the Nigerian Army Chief on the recommendation of the Brazilian Army Commander, General Eduardo Villas Boas, by President Michel Remer.

A statement by the Army spokesman Brig.Gen. Sani Usman said the honours done in Brasilia, Brazil is usually awarded to those military officers that have distinguished themselves in various military endeavours.

“Buratai is one of the few foreign dignitaries to be so honoured with such an award by the country. “According to the citation read at the occassion, the award was in recognition of his exemplary and world’s recognized leadership qualities and the Nigerian Army’s effort in the fight against terrorism and insurgency”.
While dedicating the award to Officers and Soldiers of the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian people, Buratai expressed shock at being so recognised.

“I had never imagined that I was going to be given such recognition when I was planning to visit the Brazilian Army. It is no doubt a great honour to me, the Nigerian Army and the Federal Republic of Nigeria to be bestowed with the Brazilian Military Order of Merit which is the highest and most prestigious award in the Brazilian Army”.

He also said it signifies the global recognition to the effort of the Nigerian Army at curbing insurgency and other security challenges. Noting that it is another effort at strengthening the already existing relationship and enhanced military cooperation between the two countries.
