‘Benue SEMA Inherited N28m Debt’

By Joseph Wantu, Makurdi   |   29 August 2015   |   1:49 am

DEBTTHE Executive Secretary of Benue State Emergency Management Agency, (SEMA), Boniface Ortese, has hinted that the agency inherited N28 million debt from its predecessor, adding that agency only received N4, 000 as part of hand over note the predecessor.

Ortese, who dropped the hint while fielding questions from The Guardian yesterday in his office in Makurdi, however, said the indebtedness would not deter his agency from moving forward as government has already put in place a Flood Disaster Committee headed by the state Commissioner for Works, and a sub- committee made up of technocrats to tackle the impending flood.

He stated that the first tour of the capital city occasioned by recent heavy down pour revealed that there are no serious drainage systems constructed by the past administration, even as he attributed the heavy flooding in Makurdi to indiscriminate dumping of refuse as well as erection of structures on drainages.

The Executive Secretary intimated that his agency has already taken statistic of those areas that are seriously affected by the flood with the hope of government providing them with alternative places for settlement.

The SEMA boss listed some local government councils prone to flooding to include Agatu, Gwer -West, Makurdi, Guma Tarka, Buruku and among others, and advised the people to leave these places to safer areas until the raining season is over.
