Thousands of protesting Bayelsa State students from various institutions of higher learning yesterday blocked the state office of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in Yenagoa, accusing its management of failing the state.

The students, under the aegis of the National Union of Bayelsa State Students (NUBSS) caused temporary traffic gridlock along the Melford Okilo way in Yenagoa, the state capital.

The placards carrying protesters locked the commission’s office following their anger that no senior employee of the NDDC was available to address them. This is the second time the office of government’s intervention agencies was being locked in Yenagoa, the first being the Bayelsa Revenue Board over their inability to remit taxes collected from the state workers.

President of NUBSS, Fredrick Importance, said those managing the commission’s office in the state were not on ground and did not understand the plight of Bayelsa people.

He said they made several efforts to see the management including sending letters to the commission before taking the decision to hit the streets in protest.

“Our grouse is that the NDDC in Bayelsa is not functioning. It has failed to address issues bothering on the development of the state and the welfare of Bayelsa State students.’’

Meanwhile, two weeks after denying his purported resignation as the Secretary to the State Government, (SSG), Governor Seriake Dickson yesterday formally announced the disengagement of Serena Dokubo-Spiff.

Dickson, who announced this at the end of the State Executive Council meeting, explained that the decision to release Dokubo-Spiff was based on a mutual agreement.
