The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has berated the Federal Government for what it described as insensitivity to the plight of Nigerians by failing to fulfill its campaign promises.

The union also alleged that the presidency was more concerned about the welfare of cows than that of human beings.Speaking yesterday after his reelection as chairman of the University of Ibadan (UI) branch of ASUU, Professor Deji Omole, said the time had come for Nigerians to fight for their rights and liberate themselves from the cycle of unfulfilled campaign promises. He noted that unlike Nigerian politician who will say one thing and do another, ASUU as union of intellectuals would always fight for the rights of the downtrodden.

He said the current administration seemed to be taking Nigerians for a ride and prioritising the lives of cows more than the Nigerians’ right to life as enshrined in the constitution, saying that the people must be ready to hold government accountable for their lapses.

The decision to reelect Omole was taken at the Biennial Congress of the Union presided over by the Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Ade Adejumo.
Omole, who has championed several ASUU struggles in the last two years of his chairmanship got a nod to continue owing to what the Congress described as exemplary performance.Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Professor Akinpelu Olanrewaju Olutayo, said all the positions were returned unopposed.

Also returned for a second term are Dapo Adewole (Vice Chairman), Olamakinde Olapegba (Secretary), Femi Akewula (Assistant Seccretary), Femi Ayoola (Treasurer), Sola Olawoye (Financial Secretary), Fred Oshiname  (Internal Auditor), Femi Olatoye (Investment Secretary) and Monica Odinko (Welfare Officer), among others.

In his acceptance speech, Omole said he was elated by the level of support from congress members, promised to prioritise the welfare of members.
