A human rights group, the Joint Action Front (JAF) yesterday led a peaceful protest around Ibadan metropolis calling for mass action against hike in fuel pump price by the Federal Government.

The protest, which started at the University of Ibadan (UI) end, was led by the State Coordinator of the group, Dr. Demola Aremu.

Aremu, who is also the immediate past National Treasurer of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), called for the reversal of the pump price and full prosecution of subsidy fraudsters who, he noted, are friends of government.

The protesters moved through Bodija market, where they were joined by market men and women, who complained about exorbitant cost of living in the country.

Addressing the crowd at Bodija market, Aremu said the rally was to sensitise Nigerians ahead of the mother of all protests scheduled for next week.

He noted that what President Muhammadu Buhari has given to Nigerians have been negative changes in salary payment, power, food, road and fraud in the increment of fuel price.

Aremu stated that a government that could encourage marketers to source for money from the secondary market is unserious and fraudulent.

The group wondered why all those who described removal of subsidy in 2012 under Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s administration as fraud are now the ones saying subsidy is the best for the country.

Describing the increment as an onslaught against the Nigerian people and highly insensitive, Aremu said non-payment of workers salaries, pension arrears, shortfalls of allocation to universities, fraud in power supply and unprecedented inflation were some of the achievements of President Buhari’s administration in one year.
