Against the background of military participation in securing lives and property during elections, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.- Gen. Yusuf Burutai has declared that the Nigerian Army was yet to be served with any order by the court or other institution not to participate in the polls, adding that a high powered investigation would be instituted to look into the killing of some soldiers in Rivers State recently.

Burutai made the disclosures at the weekend during his separate visits to Imo State governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha and officers and men of the 34 Field Artillery Brigade, Obinze, near Owerri.

According to the army chief, the military would continue protecting lives and properties during elections until such prohibitive papers were served on them.

Accompanied by some top Army officials, including the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Maj.-Gen. Attahiru, Burutai said he was on a familiarisation visit to the formations and units under him, appreciating the governor and the people of Imo State for providing support and equipment to the Army in the state.

While assuring that the military has taken upper hand to quash Boko Haram in the Northeast, Buratai said, “your support has contributed immensely to the level of security to the good people of Imo State and on our part, we will continue to do our best within our constitutional needs, to provide environment for peaceful co-existence in the state.”

In his response, Governor Okorocha, who received the team at the Government House, Owerri, urged the military authorities to establish a military institution in the state to give opportunity for more Imo indigenes to be recruited into the army.
