The Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission [AKISIEC] has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of all the 31chairmanship and 329 councillorship positions in the local government elections conducted at the weekend.

The Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission [AKISIEC] has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of all the 31chairmanship and 329 councillorship positions in the local government elections conducted at the weekend.

Chairman of AKISIEC, Mr. Aniedi Ikoiwak said the election was conducted in line with relevant laws. In a statement, the commission said: “The election was contested by 12 political parties and the PDP won the 31 chairmanship and 329 councillorship seats.

“This statement confirms the announcement/declarations made by the authorised returning officers in various wards and local government areas.”

The commission said details of scores as submitted by field officers would be made available by the field operations /logistics department.  AKISIEC commended the stakeholders for the good conduct exhibited during and after the elections. It said the winners would be issued certificate of return today.

But in a swift reaction, the opposition All Progressives Congress [APC], rejected the result, alleging that AKISIEC did not conduct the elections in line with the laws establishing it.

In a statement signed by the party’s chairman, secretary and chairman of the state caucus of the APC Dr. Amadu Attai, Dr. Efiong Etuk and Atuekong Don Etiebet, they asked their members to reject any result declared or announced without compliance with the procedures stipulated by the Electoral Act.

“To this end, APC wishes to inform the general public that there was no election at all according to the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010 [as amended].

“Moreover, in their quest to rig and announce spurious results, all sensitive materials including results sheet were nowhere to be found.

“Today, the party wishes to inform the security agencies, government of Akwa Ibom State, Federal Government and the general public that we reject in its entirety any concocted result that AKISIEC may wish to announce as the final result of the purported local government election,” the statement said.
