A violent drama occurred last Friday in Governor Ben Ayade’s office in Calabar, when irate youths from one of the warring groups in Obutong community dumped a corpse at the governor’s office gate in protest against the killing of one of their own.

The boys numbering about 30 had, at about 5.40pm, stormed the governor’s office chanting war songs, as they carried the corpse of one of them, said to have been killed by a rival group near the Federal Inland Water Ways jetty.

An inside source said the two groups in Obutong have been fighting over a fishing area for quite some time and last Friday, the incident escalated and one of them was killed.

At the gate of the governor’s office along Diamond Road, they dumped the dead body that had only a pair of boxers on him and insisted that the governor should take it, since government failed to intervene in the matter.

The scene became rowdy, as the boys refused to remove the corpse, resulting in the police shooting tear gas and life bullets into the air to scare them away.

After about 15 minutes of shooting, the police removed the corpse and put it in a police truck and headed for the mortuary.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident, saying, “When we heard of the incident, we had to send our men there to quell the situation.”
