LAGOS State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has removed Chairman of the State’s Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences Unit, Akeem Adedeji, barely two months he assumed office.

No reasons were given for the removal but sources said that it was not unconnected with alleged unsatisfactory conducts as head of the unit.     The news of his removal filtered in at the weekend even as the staff of the taskforce were shocked.

Adedeji was appointed last June and had since led the recent clampdown on commercial motorcyclists plying restricted routes, street urchins and illegal traders in the state.   In a telephone chat yesterday, Adedeji also confirmed his redeployment, adding that it was not due to any shady practices as alleged in some quarters.

According to him, the police positions are transitory in nature and the officers can be redeployed any time.   “The governor appointed me and with him also resides the right to remove me.

I have the most esteem regard for him (Ambode) and may God continue to guide him in his duty,” Adedeji said.    Ambode has already replaced Adedeji with a new boss, Olubukola Abey, a Superintendent of Police.

There had been reports and complaints that places where the Taskforce had cleared in the past like Obalende and Oshodi were being taken over again by hoodlums.   When he took over as taskforce chairman in June, Adedeji allegedly refused to use the spacious office left behind by his predecessor, Bayo Sulaiman and went to carve out another office for himself.

It was gathered that Adedeji feared that he might be harmed if he used the old office, which was why he never stepped in until he was removed as taskforce chairman.
