Adamawa APC lawmaker, commissioner disagree over appointment of council administrators

Governor Muhammadu Umaru Jibrilla Bindow of Adamawa State

A member representing Gombi constituency in the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Umar Rufai, has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to sanction Governor Mohammed Umaru Bindow over alleged anti-party activities.

Rufai said yesterday in Yola after the swearing- in of 50 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members as administrators of development areas and 50 secretaries.

He said the governor’s action was aimed at destroying the APC, alleging that Bindow would join PDP with his godfather, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, when he must have perfected his plans.

But in a swift reaction to the lawmaker’s protest against the governor, the Commissioner for Information, Ahmad Sajoh, said since the appointed administrators were all indigenes of the state, Bindow had not violated any laws.

Rufai, who urged the national secretariat of the party to rescue the APC from Bindow before he kills the party, pointed out that the recent appointments in the state favoured only PDP members.

This, he said, was an indication that Bindow was systematically killing the party ahead of the 2019 elections.

The lawmaker added that the party decided to drop Bindow from its aspirants list due to what he described as his woeful failure to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of the state.

Sajoh, however, explained that the Nigerian Constitution was above any law and that the governor’s appointment of the 50 administrators for the development areas was within the provisions of the law.

“The 1999 constitution and the Adamawa state laws did not stipulate that a governor should make appointment strictly based on members of his party. Some commissioners are not members of any political party, so can you say that their knowledge should be wasted because they are not members of a particular party?”
