A mild drama played out, yesterday, at the old secretariat of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) along Ribadu Square Road, Adamawa State, when Mr. Ahmed Gulak, former political adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan, joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), alongside his supporters.

Gulak, while addressing APC factional members loyal to Governor Mohammed Jibrilla Bindow that had gathered to welcome him to the party, said the constitution of the All Progressives Congress (APC) gives right to all new members to contest elections on its platform.

But sensing the ambition of Gulak to contest the governorship election in 2019, Bindow, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Abdullraman Abba Jimeta, told the new defectors that there is no vacancy at Government House and that nobody should think of contesting the office on the platform of the APC.

“Let me say this before some people would start thinking of contesting for the office of governor. There is no vacancy. We welcome you all to our party and will consider you in all our activities. But the governor’s office is a no-go area until 2023. So, be aware of this now,” he warned.

Gulak, however, said: “I have read the APC constitution several times and there is no barrier to new members to contest elections. It is unlike in the PDP where new members need a waiver from their state leadership and if they hate your face, there is no waiver for you.”

Gulak, who is believed to be eyeing the governorship ticket, told the party leadership that he and his group would partner with APC on equal basis in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution.

Reacting to Gulak’s exit from the PDP, the Adamawa State chairman of the party, Abubakar Tahir Shehu, described him as a political prostitute. He said the departure confirms that normalcy has returned to the PDP.

Shehu said: “We in PDP know that Gulak left the party in 2015 after the presidential election. It is a shame that a man like Gulak will be talking of due process when he conspired with others to take our governorship primaries in 2015 to Abuja and imposed an APC member, Nuhu Ribadu, on the party. We decided to vote against our party to prove to Gulak that he has no political value. He is a huge liability to any party he joins.”
