FOUNDED in 2008 with the vision to provide world-class training and talent promotion centre for children and youths, the African Child Social Empowerment Centre (ACSEC), is a non-profit and social organisation that seeks to discover, train and promote talent and skills of both advantaged and disadvantaged children and youths in line with morality. ACSEC in doing this believes that efforts like that would lead to the growth of the economy while making the youths agents of positive change in the society.

Towards the attainment of this vision, ACSEC recently held the second edition of the African Child Award in Lagos where it recognised and rewarded exemplary Nigerians, nay Africans that had distinguished themselves in various capacities for humanity and national development, especially in the area of children and youth training and empowerment.

Among the awardees were the wife of Anambra State Governor, Chief (Mrs.) Ebelechukwu Obiano (for using her NGO, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ) to care for the less privileged); His Royal Highness, Kabiru Agbabiaka, the Osolo of Isolo, Lagos (for using his Abike Ade Foundation to reach out to the needy in society); Chima Desmond Anyaso, a successful entrepreneur (for using the Ahuoma Anyaso Education Foundation he founded in memory of his late mother to advance the cause of child education in the country, especially in his community); Otunba Henry Oladele Ajomale (for mentoring people on good leadership); and Nkem Okibe (for using her television programme on NTA Channel 10, ‘Free Generation’, to enlighten and educate the public on the HIV epidemic and associated issues).

Others include Dr. (Mrs.) Morayo Apantaku, Founder/Medical Director, Ikeja Medical Centre (for building the facility into one of the highly rated medical centres in Nigeria through which countless lives have been saved); Timi Dakolo, an artiste (for the waves his music is making in the industry and for serving as a role model to several youths); and Mrs. Amore Adefola Olufemi, Director, Lagos State Agency for Mass Education (for championing the mass education initiatives of the agency).

Speaking with The Guardian, Founder/Executive Director of ACSEC, Dr. Bonaventure Enemali, said the organization is focused on the development of talents across the country and Africa as a whole.

“In ACSEC, we know that everybody is endowed with at least a talent. If can harness and develop these talents it would reduce drastically the rate of dependence on others by the youths. They can fend for themselves,” he noted.

Enemali explained further: “We started operations in 2009; the NGO was registered in 2008 after my youth service. In 2012, we started the 12-core project that include, Good Education For Africa (GEFAP), which is aimed at ensuring that disadvantage Africans are able to read, write and speak good English. This is aimed at curbing illiteracy among us. When one is able to read, such a person can update his skill knowledge. Even artisans, if they are able to read, they can go higher as against doing the same thing all over from year to year. We see education as very great asset.
