Authorities of the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma Edo State yesterday urged various tertiary institutions to engage in intellectual and social activities, which it said could help keep students of tertiary institutions out of cultism.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ignatius Onimawo stated this at a press briefing to announce activities for the 21st convocation ceremony of the university where he said 2, 265 graduates would be awarded with various degrees at the 21st Convocation ceremony of the school.

He said of these, ten graduates bagged first class degree, 40 would be awarded with Post Graduate Degree, 76 with Masters Degree, while 14 and 37 would receive Doctorates degree and MBBS respectively.

Besides, he said that four eminent Nigerians would be awarded honourary degree during the convocation.

He said in the last one year, the university has embarked on initiatives to improve processes and procedures of teaching, learning and administration in order to cope and be relevant in the face of current global challenges and dynamic technology.

He also noted that the process of obtaining certificates have been simplified in such a way that once results are approved by the senate, graduates get their certificate almost immediately.
“Most social vices in universities arise from frustration, non-recognition and idleness. A lot of activities have been introduced to engage the students beneficially, outside their normal academic work. There is increased regularity of inaugural lectures, distinguished lectures, faculty lectures, and local and international conferences inter-faculty competitions.

This has gone a long way to occupy students and prevent them from focusing on anti-social activities. We have introduced the Vice Chancellor’s Cup for various inter-faculty competitions. Very soon, Ambrose Alli University will be the Mecca of debates and public speaking in Nigeria. We are employing students’ idle time for competitions in debates, public speaking, comedy, sports and religious activities.

“As I speak with you, the backlog inherited from the past administration which includes more than 17, 000 of such certificates have been processed and ready for collection.

“Our University has made several giant strides that has positioned it in a better light in the comity of Universities,” he stated

Onimawo said while a number of measures have been put in place by the institution management to boost it’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), well meaning individuals have contributed immensely to the growth of the university.
