We spend so much money on our groceries and finding them spoilt in the refrigerator can be annoying. Proper storage of food makes it last longer, here are tips on how to properly store your groceries.

Bananas:

Wrap the crown of the banana with plastic wrapper and store in a refrigerator or counters. They’ll keep fresh them for at least 3-5 days longer than usual, which is especially helpful if you eat organic bananas. Keeping bananas in the freezer is a no-go thing because it will get overly soft after minutes.

Lettuce:

Use a paper towel to keep your salad lettuce fresh all week long. The paper towel will absorb the moisture. Also, get yourself a salad spinner. It’ll get rid of moisture, which is the culprit of withering leaves. cover delicate herbs like flowers with plastic, secure with a rubber band, and refrigerate.

Other Veggies:

You can wrap broccoli, lettuce, pumpkin and other leaves in the same family, in tin foil and store in the fridge. It’ll stay crisp for 4 weeks or more. However, remember not to pack your groceries or veggies too closely to other food items. This is to allow air penetration through all parts of your storage. Store raw meat and seafood on the bottom shelf to prevent drips from your meat from contaminating foods underneath it. Remember to wash and wrap meat product properly prior to storage.

Fresh Tomatoes:

Don’t store tomatoes in plastic nylon bags ! The trapped ethylene will make them ripen faster. Store rather in a paper bag or single layer in a cardboard box in a cool area (fridge) until they turn red in color. However, unripe tomatoes should be kept stem side down, Perfectly ripe tomatoes should be kept at room temperature, on the counter away from sunlight, in a single layer, not touching one another with the stem side up. Overly ripe tomatoes should be blended and kept in the freezer in there is no intention to consume yet. Again, whether in the fridge or on the counter, when selecting tomatoes to be blended for consumption, always start with the overly ripped ones and leave the stronger ones to remain for the longer duration. This is to ensure that control wide decay of tomatoes as a result of a few overly ripped ones.

Nuts:

Roast nuts as soon as you get home from the store. Nuts that are roasted have more flavour than the unroasted ones though both serve their nutritional purposes as nuts. After this, empty them into an airtight bottle containers and store in the freezer where it can be used for any recipe that calls for nuts for as long as you want to use it.

Mushrooms: Store your mushroom in a paper bag, not a plastic bag. A plastic bag will trap moisture and cause them to mildew. Put them in a paper bag in the fridge or in a cool, dry place. However, organic mushrooms should not be left for periods longer than 3-4 days to remain fit for consumption.

Ginger:

Keep ginger in the freezer to enable it grate more easily, plus it remains fresh and lasts way longer.
