Dermatologists recommend using a daily facial moisturizer as part of your skin care routine. Gently cleansing the face removes dead skin cells, dirt and bacteria, but it also strips the skin of needed hydration. Water — not oil — in the skin keeps it plump and smooth, whereas dry skin loses elasticity, making it more prone to developing wrinkles.
Mastering the “how” of facial moisturizers is the easy half of the equation. Since moisturizers stay on the skin for extended periods of time, the wrong ones can wreak pore-clogging, skin-irritating havoc. To avoid unwanted breakouts and excessive skin care expenses, follow my tips to help you figure out your skin type and how to pick the right daily facial moisturizer:
Normal Skin
Normal skin is defined as not too oily and not too dry. A person with this skin type has few imperfections, no extreme sensitivities and small, barely visible pores. Normal skin can change over time due to environmental factors, aging or hormones.

Oily Skin
Oily skin is characterized by areas with excess oil. This oil can lead to blemishes and acne. Oily skin may be caused by hormones. For example, oil gland production can increase around menstruation. Blocked pores can also lead to excess oil on the skin.

Dry Skin
Dry skin, on the other hand, has areas without enough oil. Dry skin can be the result of environmental stressors such as climate change or moisture-robbing cleansers. It can also be caused by the hormonal changes that come with aging.

Finding the Right Moisturizer for Your Skin Type
Now that you have information necessary to determine your skin type, the next step is to select the right moisturizer.

For normal skin:

Choose a light and non-greasy product to help maintain the normal moisture balance of the skin.

For dry skin:

Use a richer product with more staying power and hydrating ingredients such as shea butter, ceramides, hyaluronate, essential oils and lanolin which will help trap moisture to keep skin feeling moisturized and refreshed.

For oily skin:

Look for a moisture serum, gel or oil free lotion that is lightweight, non-greasy. Choose “noncomedogenic”, meaning it won’t clog pores, if you are prone to blackheads and whiteheads.
