Mood is an emotional state. It differs from emotions, feelings, or effects because they are less precise, less intense, and less likely to be triggered by a particular stimulus or event. Moods are typically described as having either a positive or negative valence. Hence, people speaking of being in a good or a bad mood.

Mood also differs from temperament or personality traits which are even long-lasting. Nevertheless, a personality trait such as optimism and neuroticism predisposes certain types of moods relating to the personality type in question.

Research has shown that a person’s mood can be influenced by depression, bipolar disorders or an unexpected event, meaning that we can be sent into a mood by an unexpected event.

A good example could be ‘the sudden happiness you feel from seeing an old friend or the anger of discovering a betrayal from a loved one. All these can trigger a certain kind of mood. Again, every other time, we may randomly fall into a mood, this is very common.

Based on this, we have done a bit of research and come up with list of mood booster tips grouped into categories that you can leverage on anytime you want to maintain a serene disposition to mood swings.

  • Stand up and take a walk. Go for a run or go on a bike ride.

 

  • Walk a dog.  Listen to soothing sounds; water flowing, ocean waves, wind chimes etc.

  • Listen to music. Watch funny videos or a movie you love or just fill the background with a calm music.

 

  • Eat your favourite food. Go to a cafe and sip a latte or drink a smoothie.

  • Let in natural sunlight. Light a candle or savour a smell you love

 

  • Fix something. Try something new. Partake in a random act of kindness.  Take photographs or look through old photos.

 

  • Pray. Talk to a friend. Ask for a hug. Call an optimistic friend.  Watch a sad movie and cry it all out.

  • Think.  Jot your feelings. Read inspirational quotes or chew gum  

 

Instead of resorting to something harmful, consider one of these as something you can temporarily fall on to boost your mood and you will be glad you did.
