What To Do In Zanzibar

There are very few places in the world that can have a great impact on people with its white powdered sands, clear turquoise waters and tropical palm-tree paradise like Zanzibar. Zanzibar is located off the coast of Tanzania in Africa. There are series of islands which offers a unique adventure and cultural experience, alongside pure relaxation. Zanzibar is well known for being a central port for trading over the centuries. The “Spice Islands”  is also known for being the main hub during the African slave trade. Zanzibar is a good place to visit on holiday, here are a couple of things you could do while there.

1. Spend the day at stone town

Stone Town is the heart and soul of the island. With a breath-taking mash-up of  alleys and old Arabic-style buildings, which can make you lose yourself into the town’s magic.

2. Check out Jozani Forest

Jozani is the last indigenous forest left on Zanzibar. It’s located inland from Chwaka Bay the area often floods, nurturing its unique swamp forest of many amazing looking trees and ferns.

3. Soak up some sun at Nungwi beach

Nungwi is a village in the north of. This is a very popular place with little tourists, and it’s one of Zanizbar’s top beaches. This is a great beach for those looking to just soak up some sun and dip their toes in the sea.

4. Visit Prison Island

Prison Island gives a fascinating glimpse into the island’s dark past. This land was as a prison for slaves. When slavery was abolished, it functioned as a camp where people with deadly diseases were sent. However the island is now a nature reserve for giant tortoises and a place to see the ruins that once functioned as the prison.

5. Palace Museum

The Palace Museum, commonly known as the Sultans Palace is the most historic building in Stone Town and is a must-see. The Palace Museum is located in the waterfront, overlooking the ocean, and was built in the 19th century as a home for the Sultan and his family. After the 1964 revolution the site was used as a Government building and was renamed as The People’s Palace. Today it serves as a museum that showcases relics of the past Sultan family.

6. House of wonders

The House of Wonders is an important and visually stunning historic building in Stone Town. It offers a brilliant insight into Zanzibari and Swahili culture. The House of Wonders is the grandest and tallest building in all of Stone Town and is found in a prominent location in front of the Forodhani Gardens on the old town’s seafront, in Mizingani Road.

7. Spice route

Zanzibar is well- known for its spice trade, there is nothing better than immersing yourself in the local culture than learning about its most profitable industry.

8.Eat at Forodhani market

Forodhani opens in the late afternoon in Stone Town. The buzz and energy of this market are spectacular. You can find fresh local produce as well as freshly grilled fish, meat and vegetables. The seafood options are by far the most popular and the fish is served with fried potato balls, naan bread and samosas.
