Hidden Treasures: Bequia Island

Bequia is a small island in the Grenadines, which is part of the country, St Vincent & the Grenadines. There are about 32 Grenadine islands, six of them are currently inhabited. One of the inhabited islands is the enchanting Bequia (pronounced Beh-Kway). Bequia boasts of stunning white sand beaches and quaint beach houses. It is a vibrant little town that is quite popular among tourists visiting St Vincent & the Grenadines.

The island is 30 minutes away from mainland St Vincent on the fast ferry and the air is definitely different as you approach. Colors are brighter, people are more relaxed and nearly everyone is on the beach as you get off the boat.

The island is home to a variety of fresh fruits and little shops line the streets. There’s a tiny art store on the beach selling slightly overpriced paintings but it’s worth a look. Stop by Chameleon Cafe for a rejuvenating smoothie and maybe some banana muffins. If all you want is coffee, then there’s that too.

Take a stroll round town and enjoy the scenery, chat with the locals and buy a souvenir or two before you enjoy a dip in the Atlantic. The water is clear and refreshing, always. Afterwards, you can take a nap under the palms.

If you’re ever in St Vincent & the Grenadines, spend a weekend in Bequia. It is worth the escape.
