This comedienne might not be on your ‘most popular’ list, but you’ll definitely reconsider once you listen to her or watch one of her skits. Anne Kansime is no ordinary woman from Uganda. She is a woman of raw talent who can lift your spirits at any time of the day. Kansiime Kubiryaba Anne holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science from Makerere University and started her career as a standup comedian majorly in 2014 when she began posting some of her sketch comedy skits on YouTube. Her screen breakthrough came when Citizen TV from neighboring Kenya offered her a slot to produce, star and present a comedy show once a week.

Currently Anne has over two hundred and ninety five thousand subscribers on YouTube and has amassed over 15 million views. She also has a massive following on Twitter and Instagram. Her work has merited her an appearance on BBC Focus on Africa, and she has also performed in Blantyre, Gaborone, Kigali, Kuala Lumpur, Lagos, Lilongwe, London, Lusaka and Harare. Her unique sense of humor is out of this world and her character, accent and expressions are the tools she uses to make her jokes and skits more hilarious than most.

The character of Kansiime is constantly opposing societal views and authorities. A stubborn headed down to earth Kansiime speaks her mind as it is. In the real sense of it, most people hold their tongues when they find themselves in the situation Kansiime finds herself in, be it as the overbearing wife, the student, the reckless driver, the blunt friend or staff. Whichever character she takes on, watching Kansiime is always a breath of fresh air from the kind of comedy you might be used to. Even more intriguing is she addresses a lot of societal issues present in Uganda with her skits, tackling them from a lighthearted perspective.

In an industry packed with many male colleagues, Kansiime has set herself apart by creating a niche for herself and her drive is clearly evident as she is constantly stepping up her game. This might just be due to the fact that her comedy style focuses on her personal life and her reason for adopting that style of approach to comedy is;

“I like talking about things that are going on in life, because that’s always going to be different and original”

Kansiime has set a standard for comedy in her country and has opened the door for other female stand-up comedians to be original and authentic with their jobs. Forever evolving and constantly finding new ways of entertaining her audience, it is not new that Kansiime is one comedian you should get acquainted with.
