Paris Couture Shows: From Christian Dior To Giambattista Valli

Starting with Paris, the couture shows always bring a heightened level of sophistication and finesse to clothing. Both the creative and artistic approach to these clothes are likened to a doctor performing a major operation; every pattern is perfectly aligned and every stitch is perfect.

With a lot of changes happening in design houses like Clare Waight Keller’s appointment to Givenchy and Hedi Slimane to Celine, an expectation for what the iconic fashion houses will produce is heightened.

Christian Dior

With a focus on black and white, Dior’s latest collection is clean and fuss-free. Of course, this is expected of Dior but this collection headed by Creative Head Maria Grazia Chiuri falls short of the incredible detailing and fit the design house is known for. The beauty look and fancy eyewear almost overshadowed the clothes. The artsy inspiration pulls through like the black-feathered peacock gown and intricate geometric print patterns. For Dior, their power lies in their ability to create beautiful, structured, complicated-to-make but still easy-to-wear gowns, but this collection somewhat falls short of that.

Givenchy

Since Ricardo Tisci who headed the house for more than 10 years left, expectations as to what Clare Waight Keller would bring to the position has been high. This is her debut couture collection at the design house and the changes are staggering. The whole aesthetics of the collection is soft with a focus on precision and cut rather than shock and drama.

Giambattista Valli
Aside from creating impeccably made dresses, Giambattista Valli likes drama. Latex boots paired with short gowns that oozed sophisticated S&M dominated the runway. True to his aesthetics, Valli brought the larger-than-life dresses which seem reminiscent of the design from the house Rihanna wore to the Grammys in 2015. One thing is for sure though: bows are in.
