For newlyweds and those who are engaged, this may not be your first thought. However, it is worth considering. Moving away from parents can be a really good thing to do as you embark on the next phase of your life together. I have heard people say, once you are married, you are about to begin a life adventure. I take this to mean that once you are married to your second half, the road to discovery and revelational knowledge opens. You are about to begin a journey that may have many ups and downs. Again, you are also about to be enrolled to an entirely different class of discipline than you knew. Some people will even say “your spouse is another degree to attain”. Now how well you obtain that degree would go a long way to impact on your next phase of life.

As your new phase of life begins to unfold, it becomes expedient to move away from parents, as you almost would be starting life on a clean slate. This new slate would mean; new lifestyle, new family members (partner, children, in-laws etc.), new job opportunities, new vision/passion, new friends, even new faith, etc. Hence, to entirely maximize the present, you will need some level of focus and foresight.

Here are a few benefits of moving away from both families as you become newlyweds:
  1. To Become Dependent On Each Other

Many newlyweds and couples simply struggle with separation from their extended family. This is especially true where members of a family have grown strong bonds. In situations like this, separation from your family becomes even more paramount. Creating that privacy and distance between your family help you in many ways: It helps you know your spouse for who they and not whom you are told they are, you have ample time to build strong affection from the things you both go through or the disagreement you both have learnt to resolve unaided, you find the need to be established outside external assistance, etc. This is the best way to know you have started a new life other than the one you initially had with your previous family. When you rely on either of your parents for financial assistance, for help with a disagreement, or just get too comfortable with them coming over, you begin to create more complications in your lives as couple, when marriage itself is enough complication on its own.

Key Reasons Why Newlyweds Should Move

  1. Your parents see you as independent

Putting some distance between your new home and your parents does an amazing thing: you begin to appear “grown up” in your parents’ eyes. They begin to see you more as equals instead of someone who really depends on them for everything. It also makes room for mutual respect and a deepened sense of responsibility.

Key Reasons Why Newlyweds Should Move

  1. You create your own set standard way of doing things

You might not realise this from the beginning but as time goes on you begin to see the manifestation of a lifestyle caused by reason of some decision influenced by either of the partner. This becomes evident when you hear people say things like: He is very mature now, he is no longer the Sam i used to know. etc. This is because, certain behavioural standards have been curtailed or restructured by our partners. When you move out and venture into the new world together, you end up creating a set standard way of doing things together, and it may or may not be the way your parents have raised you, but for the interest of the other person, things no longer remain as before. This in the long run; helps you to learn how to compromise, sacrifice, support, love etc. That is a beautiful part of marriage, in my opinion. Once you move out, you won’t want to move back in with your parents — that would mean losing all of the benefits of being independent with your new spouse.

Key Reasons Why Newlyweds Should Move

However stressed, these tips are not cast in stones, they are just suggestions to help you add some flare into your lives as newlyweds, but feel free to adhere to which ever principle makes the joy of your partner as well as yours unspeakable. Remember, life has one entry visa to it, once you check in, you have checked in, checking out comes with its own worries, so explore the best part of it, while you still can. Cheers and happy married life!
